What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a different state of consciousness to our usual alert self. It is a naturally occurring state of mind, which we enter into ourselves. Most of us experience it on a regular basis without even being aware of it. In hypnosis we enter a trance like state when we switch off our active conscious mind and allow the subconscious mind to take over. You may have experienced this state when driving a car from one destination to another without recollection of the whole journey. Daydreaming is another form of hypnosis.

Dispelling popular misconceptions about hypnosis

  1. You cannot be hypnotised against your will. Hypnosis is not a form of brainwashing; it is not something that is done to you but rather something that you do to yourself. A hypnotist can help to guide you with that process.
  2. Whilst under hypnosis you are in complete control at all times and cannot be made to do anything that you do not choose to do. Forget what you have seen stage hypnotists do, their shows are for entertainment value, and the willing individuals taking part are aware of the pressure to provide that entertainment. You will not reveal any secrets under hypnosis that you do not choose to divulge.
  3. You will not be asleep or unconscious during hypnosis, contrary to popular belief you will be conscious and alert and able to come out of the state at will.
  4. Most people who want to be hypnotised can be. Entering the state of hypnosis has nothing to do with being weak minded or strong minded.
